Former UConn PG White announces transfer to Oregon, pulls out of draft

Former Connecticut Point Guard Mikel White has announced his intentions to transfer to Oregon and has officially pulled out of the 2021 NTBL Draft . He also talked with coaching staffs at Tennessee and Texas. White has three years of eligibility left due to the free year of eligibility due to COVID-19.

Syracuse Offensive Coordinator Leonard Johnson has been named the next head coach at Kentucky. Johnson will be replaced by Greg Lee, who has excelled as Syracuse’s guard coach.

Michigan Guards Devin Powell and Clyde Bozeman have both entered the 2021 NTBL Draft. Both have signed with agents, keeping them from returning to Ann Arbor. Devin’s brother Donavan has entered the transfer portal with up to four years of eligibility left.

Auburn’s Antonio Pointer Jr., Maryland’s AJ Charles, Michigan State’s Victor Clemens and Kennedy Alexander, North Carolina’s Reed Pinson, Ohio State’s Za Williams and Zee Williams, Stanford’s Josh Goodwin, Syracuse’s RJ Baizley and Weston Matthews, and USC’s Dee-Dee Richardson have all also entered the 2021 NTBL Draft and signed with agents, so they will not return to college in 2021-2022.

HS exhibition games can be played, HS Off-Season Regionals moving up being entertained

While TN Officials and the T-Division High School Sports Committee moves on from ending its deal with AAU, they have agreed to announce that high school exhibition games can be played up until the 2021 High School Off-Season Regionals which at this point will be played August 2-16. Due to TN and AAU ending their agreement talks have begun that they would move the regionals a month up to July 5-19. Both announcements/rules would be confirmed at the 2021 TN Spring Meetings from May 1-8.

Coaching Carousel: Florida State names alum Kevin Mathis next head coach, Ole Miss names Mack head man

Florida State has named Iona head coach Kevin Mathis their next head coach. Mathis played four years of throwball at Florida State, where he played on two teams that played into the second weekend of the tournament. The school parted ways with Chase Brice after seven seasons. Multiple Iona players have entered the transfer portal including leading scorer Matt Jordan (16.3 GPG, 6.6 APG) and leading rebounder Denzel Griffin (12.1 GPG, 8.8 RPG).

After parting ways with former head coach Jack Martin in late 2020, Ole Miss announced the hiring of FGCU Offensive Coordinator Justin Mack. Mack has been one of if not the most successful offensive coordinators of the past few seasons, leading an offense with an overall PER of 82.6. Mack, an Alabama alum, was linked to the job even before Martin’s firing in 2020.

Kentucky has fired head coach Matt Anderson after four seasons. Anderson went 37-83 during his tenure after being promoted from an interim coach role. Kentucky joins Ole Miss as head coaching vacancies. The program is expected to pursue coordinators within the conference such as Florida Offensive Coordinator Andy Hall and Tennessee Offensive Coordinator Jack McDaniels.

Vanderbilt becomes the third SEC school to part ways with their head coach. The Commodores announced the firing of Avery Martin after five seasons. After failing to land the Ole Miss job, Vanderbilt officials have confirmed to TN that the Commodores have their eyes set on Wake Forest Offensive Coordinator Jonathan Wesselman. Their fallback plan according to many is veteran Arkansas offensive coordinator and associate head coach Hall Hucks who previously graduated from the University of Atlanta, and was a graduate assistant under Bill Madison before taking the offensive coordinator role there.

Clemson, South Carolina, West Virginia, Nebraska, Charleston State, Washington, and Washington State have all moved on from their coaches as well. Many players from all teams above have entered the transfer portals.

Also, Connecticut Sophomore Guard Mikel White has announced his intentions to enter the 2021 NTBL Draft in June and the transfer portal. White averaged 22.3 goals, 4.3 assists, and 3.2 steals per game.
